Poco Inspiration...Chuck Yeager...New Olympic Sport

Dec 8 | Posted by: Bill Whyte |

Tuesday…in the 40's again today before we sneak back into the 60's tomorrow.

YESTERDAY

Well, I had a great day of songwriting with my longtime friend Wil Nance out at his place that he built a cool writing cabin on next to his house and a few acres full of geese, and hens, and turkeys and dogs. Complete with a coffee maker, a little recording equipment, a bunch of guitars hanging on the walls a couch and a big screen. I tease him that it’s his place to hang when he his wife Holly is upset with him.

So when I walked in (and this is the way songs are built sometimes) Wil was playing guitar and that great old Poco song “Crazy Love” that I love as much as Wil does…and lots of folks for that matter. And on the 30-minute drive over, a title popped in my head that I recorded into my phone that fit seamlessly with that kind of melody and feel. Turned out to be a really cool love song to add to both of our catalogs and I’d say it’s one of the best songs I’ve helped write in a while for sure. Pretty danged productive and fun Tuesday.

SOUND BARRIER FAST

I was sorry to read that General Chuck Yeager passed away today at the age of 97. The first to break the sound barrier all those years ago, depicted beautifully in one of my favorite all time films “The Right Stuff” by Sam Shepard. I bought Chuck Yeager’s book…his bio and read it many years ago. Once I started, I hated having to put it down. Some of his missions, and the stories of what an incredible pilot he was are truly mesmerizing. Makes me want to go back and read it a second time for sure.

VIRUS NOTES

Well, it looks like we’ll get to sit back and see how the first vaccines go as Britain has started the process already. A 90-year-old woman was the first to get the vaccine. She said, “I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19, it’s the best early birthday present I could wish for because it means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the New Year after being on my own for most of the year”.

Meanwhile in the US we recorded 1.3 million new cases of the virus last week alone.

You know this has been a weird year when you realize that some folks are wearing Christmas Covid-19 masks to celebrate the season…safely…hopefully.

SPEAKING OF CHRISTMAS

Egg Nog is showing up in lots of fridges right now. I have to admit…I’m just not a fan. I like eggs a lot…Nog?  Not so much. And where does Nog come from exactly? I know where the egg comes from (and I still like eggs) but Nog?

SELLING SONGS

All of a sudden, some MAJOR songwriters are selling off their catalogs…for lots of money. David Crosby of Crosby Stills & Nash looks to be following on the heels of Stevie Nicks and Bob Dylan. Crosby is saying that “streaming” stole his money. It stole a lot of songwriter’s money as folks buy streams instead of hard copies. So why not?

I don’t know what David Crosby’s will fetch but Stevie Nicks sold the rights to her songs for 100 million and yesterday Dylan announce he sold his for 200 million dollars.  I think I might auction mine off if I had a hit or two like they’ve had in their careers.

My joke about the current “no money” situation for a lot of songwriters in regards to streaming is, “somebody is pissing in our stream”.

SUMMER OLYMPICS

Get this. At the Paris Summer Olympics “breakdancing” will be one of the competitive events being judged. Break dancing?  A sport?  If they’re going to do that then there’s really no reason that cornhole should not be an event too.

MONOLITHS

If you’ve been keeping up you know that more and more and more monoliths are popping up around the world after they found that one in Utah that disappeared for a while. I’m not sure, but I’ll bet you can buy one on Amazon Prime right now and still get free monolith delivery. And Big Foot will be driving the Amazon Prime truck I’m sure.

WANNA BE LIKE MIKE

Michael Jordan has his own golf course. On his golf course drones deliver the beer. Flies over, drops a basket down while you’re on the tee, and in it is cold beer. Air Jordan?  Why not Air Beer?

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

“Australian Jogger Attacked By Kangaroo Who May Have Been Attracted By Her Perfume”. Must have been an interesting story telling her friends how she got beat up running.

TODAY

I’m writing online with Lee Black this morning who is one of the great gospel songwriters in town who’s had so many people record his songs that I can’t count them. When Covid allows Lee is on the road quite a bit with his Southern Gospel group “Legacy 5” playing all over the country.  He’ll be behind the piano when he pops up on my computer screen, and I’ll have guitar sitting beside mine. Hopefully we can make a little magic together this morning.

Have a great Tuesday!
