Black Eye Friday...A Spear Museum and Lots Of Football

Well...I don't shop on the day after Thanksgiving...so I always call this "Leftover Friday" instead of "Black Friday".  Hope you and yours had a great Turkey day.  My advice?  Stay away from the bathroom scale.

WITH THAT IN MIND...

Lots of folks are lined up for those door buster deals and already two reports are in that make ya go..."why don't I shop online"?  One...a shot was fired outside a mall in my home-state of Missouri.  (someone impatient for half off on socks and underwear I suppose.). The second one happened in Alabama...at a mall that was forced to CLOSE because a shopping brawl.

We might as well make this a sport.  Put a TV up for grabs...make the shoppers square off in the Octagon and the winner gets the tube.  Televise the whole thing.  We'll call it "Black Eye Friday".

IT'S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE...

At my Starbucks this morning the baristas were wearing elf and reindeer ears...and Christmas music was playing.  Christmas movies have been running on TV for awhile last night.  I found myself laughing out loud again at "Home Alone" where that little kid (McCauley Culkin) give those two burglars (Joe Pesci-Daniel Stern) more than they bargain for.  Makes me check out every door knob now before I ever turn one.  No stopping Christmas...it's on...big time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

To the biggest sub-note in music history.  Pete Best is 76.  The first Beatles drummer...replaced by Ringo Starr.  I'm guessing that still hurts today.  Born in India...he's now known famously as the Fifth Beatle.  He gave up music for a long while...became a civil servant before forming a little group of his own.  The Beatles by John Lennon's own admission were "cowards" for not telling him.  They let their manager Brian Epstein deliver the news.

This is what Paul McCartney said about the firing.

George Martin was used to drummers being very 'in time', because all the big-band session drummers he used had a great sense of time. Now, our Liverpool drummers had a sense of spirit, emotion, economy even, but not a deadly sense of time. This would bother producers making a record. George took us to one side and said, 'I'm really unhappy with the drummer. Would you consider changing him?' We said, 'No, we can't!' It was one of those terrible things you go through as kids. Can we betray him? No. But our career was on the line. Maybe they were going to cancel our contract…

Hope you have a Happy Birthday Mr. Best...you deserved better.

OTHER MUSIC NEWS

Conway Twitty is releasing his first VINYL record in over 26 years.  Harold Jenkins (his real name) has been gone for a long while now but apparently he recorded a "live" album with his band that was never put out.  Look for it now.  I'm still trying to figure out why I never get any ear splitting screams from women when I say, "Hello Darlin".

THEM AND US

Apparently tennis star Serena Williams wedding-engagement diamond is big.  How big is it?  You can see if from space.  I can't make this stuff up.  Of course if they point that telescope in just the right direction...you can also see the Claw Machine" I got my wife's engagement ring from.

GREEN ACRES

A new survey tells us more folks are leaving their desk jobs for the farm...and farm jobs.  Pretty sure none of these folks have experienced stacking hay in a loft on a 100 degree summer day or castrated a hog.   Look for those numbers to tilt back the other way before too long.

THINGS THAT MAKE ME SMILE

Every year I go to Gulf Shores Alabama and make jokes about the Spear Hunting Museum that's on the beach road that runs off I-65 right to the beach.  It's on your left hand side way before you hit the water...and it's NEVER open.  Just the mention of it on stage gets a laugh from locals.  And it made an impact with my Wisconsin friend Nancy Werve who posted this picture of it on her Facebook page as she and her family returned home.  She told me..."it wasn't open".  Still laughing.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

"86 Year Old Woman With A Walker Robs Bank...Demands $400".  Yes...she was arrested.  Apparently she had been to the bank earlier and thought she had been short changed so she did what any Senior Citizen would do in Philadelphia.  She got her gun and walker and headed back.  Hard to make a quick get-a-way with a walker.

TODAY

Lot of college football on...Missouri-Arkansas will get my attention...but the really big matchups happen tomorrow.  Ohio State-Michigan and certainly the Iron Bowl with Bama-Auburn going at it again.  It's a leftover-football weekend coming up at the Whyte House.

Have a great weekend!
