New Writers...Frank Brown and Hot Chicken

Last Friday of October.  Flannel season begins.

YESTERDAY

I wrote for the first time with Matthew Szlachetka (yes...I have to double check still before attempting to spell his last name) who is a young talented writer-Americana type artist who I met while playing a show in Gatlinburg.  On his own with his gig money he bought a house...re-did it...and he's dug in for the long haul here in Music City.  I always admire young talent that make that kind of commitment go for their dream.  And...it's hard not to like a guy who has a ton of vinyl albums in his living room!  Heck...it was just fun combing through some of those classics before we even started trying to write a song...which turned out to be great and made for a perfect ending for our afternoon session.  We'll do it again for sure.  Fun day.

FRANK BROWN

The Frank Brown Songwriters Festival is coming up in Gulf Shores.  Our "Hits & Grins" trio will play 4 times this year November 16-18 and I have one set scheduled with my long time friend Brent Burns.  If you need a little beach vacation with music...and who doesn't...you should most surely consider coming down and enjoying this great festival full of great songwriters and artists playing at beach venues in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and all the way into Pensacola.  You can find all my venues and info for the festival on my website calendar section.  Hope to see you down there.

CAST YOUR VOTES

I'm a lifetime member of the CMA and one of the privileges each year is getting to cast a vote for the Country Music Awards coming up in a few weeks.  The ballots are out...and I'll cast my little vote later this morning.  Good luck to all the talented folks being considered this year.  Receiving one of those crystal trophies is quite the experience...they can never take it away from ya.  It was certainly an evening I'll never forget when I was fortunate to win one for my radio work.  Blessed.  And some more folks are going to feel that kind of blessed shortly.  Good luck to all.

HAVE YOU EVER??

Got a bruise...or a cut...or a lump on your body and wondered...where did that come from?  Weird ain't it?  I seem to do this regularly as my wife will go..."where did you get that" and I have to think about it.  Usually I remember..."oh yea... I do remember that hurting" but for the life of me...I can't recall what door or ceiling I ran into.  I'm going to build an app for that that will be Siri activated.  "Hey Siri...how come the top of my head is bleeding"?  And then the video will pop up for an "ah-hah" moment.  Usually those things are my fault..stupidly.  So...maybe I'll call it the "dumb-ass-App".  Look for it by Christmas.

And...if you're one of those who likes to see bruises and bumps...ask either a motorcycle rider or a bull rider.  They'll have one or two or three.

FOR YOUR SELF PROTECTION

Honolulu is the first city to actually pass a law that makes it illegal to text while you're crossing the road.  Good plan.  How did the chicken get across the road?  I guarantee you that not one Rhode Island Red, Rooster, and Dominicker Hen was texting when they waddled across the asphalt.

SPEAKING OF CHICKENS

Nashville just keeps adding HOT chicken places.  Folks like it hot here in the south...really hot.  I can't get into it.  Nope.  Not my thing.  I don't like wiping tears from my face when I'm eating...that's just me maybe.  My first experience eating hot happened one day when I was young in Burkburnett, Texas where my late Uncle Alan and his wife and family once lived while he was in the Air Force.  My aunts from Missouri were going to see them and invited me to with them.  I was still in grade school I think at the time.  So it was a huge adventure for me...being out of the state of Missouri for the first time.

And that's another weird observation I made at a young age.  I always thought that when I got to go to Illinois and out of the state for the first time that it would be an amazing experience.  That somehow just because I was crossing into another state it would be exciting and the scenery would change.  It's amazing how much west Illinois looked like east Missouri.  Duh!

Back to the "hot".  So anyway...my Uncle Alan takes us out to a local Mexican Cafe.  My first time trying Mexican.  There's a little bottle of jalapeno peppers on the table we're seated at.  He takes on out...chomps it and tells me how great they are.  Try it.  Right.  I think I just put the tip of my tongue on it and then called the fire department...while he was doubled over with laughter.  My Uncle Alan is gone now.  I've never been back to Burkburnett, never tried another jalapeno...and somewhere up there...I'm sure he's never stopped laughing.

NEED A JOB

An MSN article listed 6 jobs that will be in demand big time by 2040.  One is for robot trainers.  How one trains a robot...I dunno.  The other will be for drone traffic controllers.  Wow.  I've seen the future...and it don't include me.  I still have trouble booting up my computer each morning and that dial up modem I have is so annoying.

FOR SALE

So this guy has a ranch out in Arizona he wants to sell for 5 million bucks.  The ONLY reason he's selling it...according to him is that he's just tired of fighting the aliens that keep showing up.  And I'm not talking about aliens who oppose the wall...I'm talking about those little green people.  10 acres worth of alien fighting, ranching, roping and branding.  The list of folks making a bid should be interesting to say the least.

THE WEEKEND

Kind of quiet...my writing appointment had to cancel today so I've go the day free.  One of my young co-writers Daisy Mallory gets married tomorrow!  We're planning on attending that.  Daisy is out these days with Lori Morgan playing guitar and singing harmony for Lori.  Happy that she's found. great guy.

Monday afternoon I'm scheduled to be on WSM radio...but that could change for reasons I can't share right now but will when the time is appropriate.

And I think the World Series game 3 is on tonight...so I'll be on the couch.

Have a great weekend!
