California Rhyming...New Country Single...Blast on the Bay

Oct 15 | Posted by: Bill Whyte |

My bags are repacked and ready to go the beach with me and my guitar in just a few minutes. Leaving in time it looks like to get out of the path of a severe storm that should be hitting middle Tennessee later today. It will be 86 and mostly sunny where I’m headed today.

YESTERDAY

I had a songwriter coaching session with Ben Krahne, a gentleman who lives in Sonoma…wine country in northern California. Ben booked a session with me through my friend Brent Baxter as he needed help try and make better a song he’d mostly written. We spent a little less than an hour on the computer with me helping him tweak some of his lines a bit, and I do think we made is idea shine a little more. And it was a good idea. Happy to help and meet another person online with a passion for writing songs. So thank you Ben.

NOW THIS IS COUNTRY

My traditionalist friend Scott Southworth is releasing this new single and lyric video “Less to Break” at noon today that I wrote with him. Folks, if you like country in your “country”, if you like your country with steel and fiddles? I think you’ll love this as I do. Thank you, Scott, for making it your new single, and for singing the heck out of it. And thanks for letting me help you write it.

MAY 6 ARLINGTON

I put a new date on my calendar yesterday. “Evening in the Round” with Linda Davis, Lang Scott and myself will play in Arlington, Texas on May 6. at the Arlington Music Hall.  Details are on the calendar. Arlington is home of the Texas Rangers baseball team, and their new stadium is one of 7 major league parks I’ve not seen. So I am HOPING they will be in town while we’re out there and allow me to scratch another park off the list. We’re coming back to the Lone Star y’all.

VIRUS NOTES

The FDA is now recommending a booster if you got the Moderna shot. Especially for those 65 and older.

NYC now says 84% of all those who live in the Big Apple have had at least one jab.

To lighten up on the Covid here’s a funny story. A husband purchased a world map and then gave his wife a dart and said, throw this and wherever it lands, that’s where I’m taking you when this pandemic ends.” She said, “Apparently we’ll be spending two weeks behind the fridge”.

HOWIE

Comedian Howie Mandel fainted at a Starbucks a couple of days ago. Now we know why. He’d just had a colonoscopy (as I did) and went straight to work. He stopped and filled up on Starbucks. Coffee tends to dry you up and he got dehydrated. Not many fluids in your body after a colonoscopy. Water would have been a better idea. He’s fine, but if you’re scheduling a colonoscopy?  Don’t hit the drive-thru at Starbucks right after you’re finished. A Grande Pike might make you Grande faint.

FUNNY AND MOSTLY TRUE

That would be this quote from Ogden Nash who says, “Marriage is the bond between a person who never remembers anniversaries and another who never forgets them”. I know which one I am. How about you?

GET USED TO IT

A major Chinese consumer goods maker says we can expect chip shortages for another 2 or 3 years. Great. I’m waiting on a new car right now. Been waiting for 3 weeks or so and counting. And it sounds like it might be another 2 or 3 before it has a chance of showing up. All because of the chip shortage. Car lots look like empty ghost towns these days with little product on the lots. I half expected to see tumbleweeds at the dealership I bought mine at.

MEANWHILE

Unemployment in the country is now at the lowest level since the pandemic began. So folks are starting to work again. I can only hope some of them are working on making chips for cars!

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

“Man Rents Poisonous Snake to Kill His Wife and Marry Another Woman”. Geez. You can rent a snake?

TODAY

We’re on the road and won’t stop until our wheels meet the water down in Apalachicola country…Port St. Joe, Florida.

Our “Hits & Grins” trio has three shows slotted for this years "Blast on the Bay" songwriters festival. 1 today, 2 tomorrow before we head back to Nashville on Sunday. Here’s the schedule.

Tonight 7 pm Lookout Lounge (Mexico Beach)

Saturday 11 AM show at “The View”

And Saturday evening 5 pm show at Tap Root.

This is truly a great festival, and I hope to see some of you there.

Have a great weekend!
