Tom T Hall...John Prine...Brent Burns At The Waffle House

Jan 16 | Posted by: Bill Whyte |

Hump Day…over it we try to go.  Our extended Nashville forecast this morning is calling for a low of 20 this Saturday night which makes me glad I'll be even further south when that happens.

Well… I wrote a parody song to this controversial Gillette story that some have taken offense too.  Here’s the COMMERCIAL…see what you think.  I turned the Waylon & Willie classic into “Gillette Don’t Tell Me How Raise My Kids” from “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”.

With that done my wife and I went to the movies and saw “Upside” with Kevin Hart, Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman.  Two thumbs up.  And a brilliant balance of funny with sad and serious and heart tugging.  This will do nothing to diminish the bankability of Kevin Hart for sure as his “serious” takes were just as good as his “funny” takes that he’s famous for in this true story. And Bryan Cranston was just excellent as always.  Really enjoyed it.

I agree with what a friend of mine posted yesterday on her Facebook page when she saw that Tom T. Hall and John Prine will be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.  “What took so long”? I love what Tom says during his "live" performance at the Bluebird Cafe that you'll see in the video link.  He admitted he wasn't good at making up songs...which is why most of his songs are true or autobiographical.

And then John Prine said about songwriting, "I'm not writing poetry...I'm writing lyrics".  There's a difference...and Mr. Prine mastered the difference.

Really.  So deserved.  I’m a big fan of both.

My beach pal Brent Burns who I’ll be joining for two shows this weekend down on the Gulf Coast has his new CD out not titled “70 & Partly Sunny”.  I think I have seven co-writes on this song and wanted to share one of the funny one’s we wrote on this project…”Midnight At The Waffle House”.  Brent’s idea in case anyone at Waffle House is reading this blog.  Enjoy.

Valentine Day now less than a month away so we are getting constant ad reminders and suggestions about what to get for our sweeties.  This is a sweetie of an idea…as Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup bouquet.  Nothing says love like peanut butter and chocolate.  And it does look more attractive than the Spam bouquet I gave my wife last year.  She’s still trying to figure out how the little key works.

The all new Celery Juice idea.  Sounds just danged delicious doesn’t it.  I’d bet the ranch that I could get folks to sign up for the all new Mac N Cheese diet plan and convince them through fake ads on social media that it will help them lose weight.  And if I can get it in “juice” form pouring out of a blender…I know it will take hold.  At least until folks step on the scales a week later.

Amazon is now in the food delivery business too.  Right to your door.  So if you really want some celery juice or a Reese’s bouquet…and don’t want anyone but the deliverer to know you’re hooked on chocolate or celery…you’ve got that option.

I read an article that talks about weird things folks do that make some of nod our head in agreement.  Interviewing yourself like you’re on TV while you’re driving.  No comment.

One lady claims if someone sneezes near her she will hold her breath for five seconds.  I’ve not done that…but do admit if someone is smoking I’ll hold my breath til I get well past the trail of smoke.  And I’d guess I’m not the only one.

Some hotels are now installing bowling alleys.  I guess they’re hot again.  I’m going to have to remember to request a room far away from the alley.

And…some craft breweries are now rolling out their own brand of non-alcoholic beer.  I’m simple minded I know…but how do you call it BEER when there’s no alcohol?  I’m convinced that someone had to have been a Clydesdale short of a full team when they thought up this idea.

A little comedy writing for New York this morning…and then some work on a contract that’s going to lead to something pretty cool that I’ll be able to talk about in a couple of weeks or so.

Have a great Wednesday!
