That "Austin" Songwriter...Radio Landscape...Quacker Time Again

Jan 15 | Posted by: Bill Whyte |

Hump Day again.  And pretty much the middle of January all dang ready.  Although, considering our warm weather we could declare it Spring here.  72 for a high here today!

I wrote for the first time with Kirsti Manna who’s been working at her craft for a long time.  She teaches, she writes, she plays and she inspires a lot of young girl writers imparting the wisdom she’s collected in the business.  And she still loves the creative process.  That showed up yesterday when the two of us wrote a very fun song.  I don’t know why it took us so long to rhyme together but we’ll be doing more of that in the future for sure.

Check out this VIDEO of Kirsti with her husband Bill playing her big hit for Blake Shelton "live" one night.

IHeart Radio is laying off hundreds of radio folks…a radio “bloodbath” as one insider stated.  More computerization…less “live” on air jobs that keep shrinking.  And while I got into songwriting at maybe the worst monetary time in history, things evened out in my radio career because I worked in era where every jock was “live” on air and was blessed to work in some very creative environments.  The truth is, most radio listeners can’t tell that the voice they’re listening to is a recorded voice instead of a “live” personality.  And with the constant challenge for a viewer or listeners attention outside of traditional TV and or radio…attentions spans are short and thus you get very short moments to actually talk…especially after morning drive.  "Shut up and play the hits" seems to be more and more the norm.  It’s a business…I surely get that.  I’m just glad I was in that business when it was a lot more fun.

So it’s not just a lot of radio folk looking for jobs.  A lot of baseball managers and GM’s are looking too in the wake of the baseball “stealing” signs scandal.  Joey Cora of the Boston Red Sox is the latest to lose his job.  And meanwhile Pete Rose is scratching his head wondering if what he did was as bad as what these guys did altering the outcome of baseball games.  Gonna be less computers in the dugouts in the future for sure.

Now Prince Harry is out of job too fleeing England with his bride.  I love the fact that (tongue in cheek) Burger King let the world know that they had a job for the Prince if he wants it.  Hey…they’ve got a crown ready to put on his head.

And then ya got Snoop Dogg in TV commercials selling glazed donut sandwiches for Dunkin’ Donuts.  I got news for Dunkin.  You could have saved millions by not hiring him and just put it up on the board with a picture of a glazed donut sandwich.  Who wouldn’t buy that heart attack?

It did get my attention that we live in tense times when I read a stock expert suggesting 6 or 7 good defense stocks we should be adding to our portfolios.  I should not have invested so heavily in Goat Yoga stocks.

I know it’s early, but I’ve been a good boy for the first 15 days of 2020.  So when your sleigh hits my roof this Christmas…could you toss one of these 2020 Polaris Slingshots down my chimney?  It would be a heck of a conversation starter if I pulled up at a songwriting appointment with my computer and guitar riding in one of these bad boys.

People are amazing.  There’s a story out about a German Jewish woman who hid from the Nazi’s in World War II.  While she hid she painted…a lot.  In fact, over 700 paintings have been found that came from her brush during that period of time.  Considering what was at stake?  I can imagine that some of these are going to be valuable.  Anne Frank left us a book.  Elsa Koditschek left art.  Quite an amazing story.  If you want to find out more about her just check out this ARTICLE

“What Does It Mean To Dream About Losing Your Teeth”?  I didn’t want to know.  My dreams are more about panic from losing my iPhone.

Off to write something “country” today with the Georgia Quacker Gerald Smith.  Always fun, though I have to exercise self-discipline when I’m around the “Quacker” because he’s always showing up with guitars that he buys.  Yep…a bit addicted.  Gerald can’t pass a Pawn Shop without checking to see what’s hanging on the wall. And one of those I liked so much I bought it from him.  And that means I went into the hole big time on that writing session.  I’m going to leave my wallet at home…just in case.

Have a great Wednesday!
